1.The George and Dragon, Clifton, Penrith Cumbria, CA10 2ER.

Not only is the Honister Slate Mine one of the most popular attractions in the Lake District, but it is also home to one of the best café-bars. The Yew Tree offers a wide range of cuisine, and specialises in Cumbrian produce from local suppliers. Also a great choice of real ales.

3.Horse and Farrier Inn, Threlkeld, Keswick, Cumbria, CA12 4SQ. Tel: 017687 79688. The Horse and Farrier is located just 4 miles east of Keswick, and enjoys one of the best locations in the lakes. You can find plenty of walking routes starting at Threlkeld, and the old inn offers a wide range of delicious local dishes which have won many awards, plus a choice of real ales.

4.The Highwayman, Burrow, Nr Kirkby Lonsdale, Lancashire, LA6 2RJ. Tel: 01524 273338. The Highwayman is one of the most popular country pubs in the Lake District, and attracts plenty of tourists and locals. Located in  Burrow, this 18th Century inn is an award-winning gastro pub with authentic flagstone floors and beautiful interiors. Formerly a coaching house, the Highwayman is steeped in history, and enjoyed a complete renovation in 2007. Local cuisine features on the menu, and real ale fans are in for a  real treat.

5.The Sycamore Tree, 40/42 Bridge Street, Longtown, Carlisle, Cumbria, CA6 5UD. Tel: 01228 791919.  This daytime café/night time bistro, is one of the most popular places to eat and drink in Carlisle. Specialising in home-cooked Cumbrian food, the Sycamore Tree comes highly recommended, and is the perfect place to stop for refreshment after a sightseeing tour of Carlisle.

6.Watermill Inn and Brewery, Ings, near Windermere, Kendal, Cumbria, LA8 9PY.
Tel: 01539 821309. The Watermill is a family-run inn close to Windermere, which enjoys one of the most scenic locations in the area. Home-cooked food and a range of real ales make this one of the most popular hostelries near Windermere.

7.Kirkstile Inn, Loweswater, Cockermouth, Cumbria, CA13 ORU. Tel: 01900 85219. This beautiful inn is situated between Loweswater and Crummock Water, and serves an excellent range of local food.
