1.Scenic train rides
The Settle to Carlisle rail journey takes you through the magnificent Yorkshire Dales, over the 24 arches of the Ribblehead Viaduct before plunging in to the longest tunnel on the line at Blea Moor. Emerging onto the side of Dentdale, the line leaves the Dales at Garsdale and makes it way through the gentle, lush rolling hills of the Eden Valley, with rural villages and market towns before arriving at the great border city of Carlisle.
2.Romantic boat trips on Windermere
There is no better way to explore Windermere than by boat, and you can enjoy a trip down England´s longest lake from Bowness Bay. Either take a trip across the lake, or buy a day ticket, which will enable you to hop on and off the boat wherever you please. Private boats are also available for hire, or if you are feeling adventurous, hire a rowing boat.

Blessed with some of the finest scenery in England, the Lake District attracts thousands of walkers every year. The Lake District boasts some of the best Michelin starred restaurants in the UK, and whether you are visiting for a special occasion, a birthday or honeymoon, you can treat yourself to a meal at Gilpin Lodge, Windermere, L´enclume at Cartmel, Sharrow Bay at Ullswater or the new kid on the block, the Samling at Ambleside. Not only do these restaurants offer superb food, but they are also situated in some of the most scenic parts of the Lake District.
5.Windermere picnics
If you are lucky enough to visit Windermere during the warmer months, take a picnic down to the shores of this magnificent lake, and enjoy some of the most scenic countryside in England. 6.A trip to Levens Hall
Take a trip around the spectacular topiary gardens of Levens Hall. This grade 1 listed garden dates back to 1694, and it has survived in its original design. The topiary is some of the oldest in the world, and visitors come here from all over the world to enjoy the hall and the grounds. To celebrate the partnership of Colonel James Grahme and his gardener Guillaume Beaumont, a fountain garden, bordered with pleached limes, was added in 1994, the garden's 300th anniversary. The main hall is also open to visitors, which was the main home of wealthy landowners, the Bellinghams, in the 1590s.
7.Windermere horse riding
Windermere and the Lake District boasts some of the best horse riding centres in the north of England, and there is no better way to see the countryside than by donning some riding boots and heading out into the rugged wilderness of the Lake District National Park. Whether you are a keen rider or a novice, you can take lessons from expert instructors, let your hair down and feel at one with nature. A number of companies around Windermere offer riding tours for all ages and abilities, and you can ask at hotel reception for more information.
8.Cinema and theatre the Lake District
If you are a fan of the big screen, take a trip to the Brewery Arts Centre at Kendal, the Royalty Cinema at Bowness, or the unique Zefferelli´s Cinema at Ambleside. If theatre is more your thing, check out the plays and productions at the Old Laundry Theatre in Bowness, the Playhouse at Brampton or the Sands Centre in Carlisle.
